Big Bowl - Edina, MN

Location:
Big Bowl
3669 Galleria Edina, MN 55434
(952) 928-7888

Last weekend the wife and I dropped the boys off at the movie theater so we took the opportunity to put some Food On My Face! Before I talk about our dinner and dessert, let's talk a little bit about Big Bowl, the company. Big Bowl is part of the family of restaurants known as Lettuce Entertain You. They own over 70 restaurants across the nation.  Even though they are large and have a national presence, they operate each restaurant with a focus on local products when possible. The bigger your restaurant family becomes the harder it is to accomplish this.  For more information about this check out this link.

PANANG CURRY CHICKEN $12.95
all natural chicken in peanut-coconut curry sauce, fresnos, snow peas
My apologies to the chef! We dug into this food before I was able to capture a nice photo first! But it was that good. Nice balance of peanut and coconut... and perhaps slightly more weighted on the coconut which is just the way I like these kinds of curry. On a scale of 1 to 10 it was 5 on the 'heat scale'.

Drinks? If you are trying to save a buck stop by the Big Bowl on one of their 'half price bottle of wine' nights. We shared a chilled bottle of Yellow+Blue Sauvignon Blanc and it was very nice, especially considering it was a warm summer evening on the patio. By the way it wasn't a bottle, Y+B wines come in environmentally friendly packaging!
Ok now dessert...

Lemon Pudding Cake

Ok this was incredible. The lemon pudding sank nicely into the cake. Just enough tart taste in the lemon. The berries were local and the blackberry gelato comes from Sonny's located right here in Minneapolis! It was a perfect ending to a great meal. If the food wasn't great, check out this price! Just $4.95

Local Brand - JOIA All Natural Soda

Refreshing! Introducing Joia All Natural Soda! These one-of-a-kind beverages are made right here in the Twin Cities.  They remind me a lot of the "also-amazing" Spring Grove sodas but instead of creating classic flavors like Orange or Root Beer they take a fruit and mix it up with hints of herbs and spices! For example they take pineapple and add coconut & nutmeg; lime and add hibiscus & clove; grapefruit and add chamomile & cardamom; black cherry and add pomegranate & ginger! These are the kind of sodas you can pair with a really nice meal.

Food On My Face FAVORITE: LIME Hibiscus & Clove
Hopefully by now I have made you taste buds water and you are asking, "Where can I get these sodas?". Great question! Click on this link and find out. Basically you will find them at some of the nicest restaurants, grocery stores, and co-ops. You can also mix these drinks with your favorite liquor. The Joia website has some really fun ideas/recipes on how to do that! If you are already a fan of Joia please comment below with you favorite flavor!

These are the kind of drinks you can seriously fall in love with!

Heartland Restaurant - Farm Direct Market

Location:
Heartland Restaurant's Farm Direct Market
 289 East 5th Street
Saint Paul, MN 55101

Today's 'half serving' from the market. Pork meatloaf, potatoes, and snap peas with garlic & ginger!
For my first restaurant review I decided to go to one of my most favorite locations in the Twin Cities, Heartland Restaurant.  For all of you that already know about Heartland you don't need a review from the "Food on my Face" guy to tell you about the quality ingredients used and how good the food tastes! To those that are learning about this place for the first time, this is for you!

My office is right around the corner from Heartland in Lowertown St Paul, which is across the street from the St Paul Farmer's Market. Our Lowertown community is really blessed to have a restaurant like this in it's neighborhood. I encourage you to check out their website to learn more about their award winning chef and restaurateur Lenny Russo, the restaurant, the farm direct market, and the Market House itself!

Today my review is about the Farm Direct Market. Just like the restaurant the Farm Direct Market uses all  fresh ingredients from local and regional farmers.  The have the most amazing selection of fresh meat, fish, and cheese. You can also purchase vegetables, coffee, natural sodas, soup stocks, jams, jellies, and their own fresh bakery items, etc...  However, I'm here today to talk about their daily lunch special. The picture above shows a 'half serving' of today's lunch.  Cost $9. Pork meatloaf packed with a nice balance of herbs and most notably fennel. Side of potatoes and snap peas with garlic & ginger.

The staff are always friendly. I encourage you to stop by this special gem in Lowertown!
